I was 7 years old the last time I was in Antigua, and everything looked just the way I remembered it. Between Volcan de Agua, Acatenango and Volcan de Fuego sits this enchanting city that allows us to travel back in time to Guatemala’s past...
My dad had arrived a few weeks before me and had already gotten back to his roots and was spending a lot of time with the family... now it was my turn :)
Antigua was Guatemala’s capital until a major earthquake hit in 1773. The city suffered great damage and much of the population moved away from the city, reducing its population by nearly half. However, Antigua still caters to those of us living in the 21st century.
As I walked through the cobble stone streets in awe, admiring the city's colonial charm of everything that had been preserved (great ruins, churches and friendly faces) I felt at home.
The first thing you notice when you enter the Antigua marketplace is all of the amazing women walking around with large items on their cabezas. They put everything up there! Baskets full of laundry, piles of wood, large vases filled with agua, it's craziness! Yung and I tried to fit in with the locals, but are talents were little to be desired. We walked through all of the small buildings, weaving in and out through the isles, touching everything and bargaining with all of the vendors.
